After a rather good day that included getting some files backed up (and starting this blog), it happened. My G4 laptop croaked. Actually, the screen hinge snapped somehow when I opened it up. This adds to the two other items I was meaning to take it in for (battery and unreliable CD use). Hopefully my AppleCare warranty will cover them. Meanwhile I'm transferring files to an external Firewire drive for use on a substitute iMac 400.
