I took my laptop into a local Apple repair shop and was suprised to find out that the hinge problem probably wouldn't be covered by my AppleCare policy. After some thought, I took it back and decided to try and repair it myself. After a bit of a "McGuyver" treatment, it's back and functioning. Not sure how long it will hold, but as long as I don't open it extremely far, it seems to be holding. At least it's usable, although I may end up ordering the new part and installing it myself. The replacement iMac 400 was a dog, which helped me decide to fix it myself.
